Some might say the road to an MLS championship in 2026 runs through the West. That is, if it wasn’t for the behemoth that continues to peculate over in Miami.

Three of the top four teams favored to win the MLS outright in 2026 will battle for their lives in the extremely stacked Western Conference. Although any team escaping the West will struggle to contend with Messi’s molten melting pot of worldly talent, these carefully calibrated odds offered by sportsbooks and prediction markets should serve as barometers of each team’s relative conference and league power.

Futures odds (and all odds, really) can be boiled down to what the bookmakers calculate as a team’s probability to accomplish the underlying task. Essentially, odds to win a league or a conference are the book’s power rankings, in turn, affecting their match-day lines.

Knowing how your bookmaker assesses a team as a whole is an excellent way of understanding why a team’s match odds swing one way or the other. Keeping the pulse of these odds will not only help you better gauge the hierarchy of the conference, but it also opens up opportunities to find value, as well as overlooked shifts amongst daily odds pulling the same thread.

Let’s take a look at the top 10 teams in these preseason odds to see how each team currently fairs in the eyes of the bookies.

*(odds to the west: \~implied winning probability)*

### **1\. LAFC (+300: \~25%)**

The high-flying Heung-Min Son and Denis Bouanga show should continue to astound and amaze this season, with the duo’s bromance brimming with so much potential and promise that even this Nor Cal fan can’t help but root for them. After Son’s arrival in MLS, the two were the only teammates in the league to rank in the top five for goal contributions per minute (Son one every 68.9 minutes and Bouanga every 81.8 minutes). Getting busy on offense won’t be the only thing keeping LAFC atop these rankings all season. Hugo Lloris (1.01 goals conceded/90), Sergi Palencia (92nd percentile in tackling), and Ryan Porteous (90th percentile in aerial duels won and clearances) return from last season’s second-best defense and should continue to make scoring difficult for all opponents attempting to challenge this crown.

*Next game: v. Inter Miami | odds to win +126: \~44%*

---

### **2\. Vancouver Whitecaps (+350: \~22%)**

The Caps also benefited from a mid-season boost from an aging European star when German transfer Thomas Müller made his emphatic entrance into the league last August. If Sebastian Berhalter’s unexpected breakthrough season can be replicated, Vancouver’s top two players, along with Sam Adekugbe, will ensure that at least one elite player will patrol each thirds of the pitch. However, a consistent, complementary scorer to Müller will have to emerge to truly contend with LAFC’s two-headed goal-scoring dragon.

*Next game: v. Real Salt Lake | odds to win -150: \~60%*

---

### **3\. San Diego FC (+600: \~14%)**

Despite winning the Western Conference in their inaugural season, repeating the task may actually be even more difficult for San Diego FC. With the cat out of the bag that this team can compete on all levels, the engine of this team, Christopher McVey, needs to once again vie for the league’s top defensive distributor and continue to help this team purr towards another conference title battle. Jeppe Tverskov will once again be the main facilitator of the ball through the middle of the pitch, with Andres Dreyer looking to capitalize on his creativity. However, a fallout with Hirving Lozano and his departure from the team leaves a hole that a complementary goal-scorer will need to fill.

*Next game: v. CF Montreal | odds to win -192: \~67%\]*

---

### **4\. Los Angeles Galaxy (+700: \~12%)**

Like Vancouver, the LA Galaxy will also be leaning heavily on a former German legend in Marco Reus. With Riqui Puig missing another season, Reus’s MLS renaissance will need to carry over into another season if the Galaxy hopes to stay in the MLS Western Conference championship conversation. The addition of clinical finisher João Klauss may be the needle mover as he will anchor Greg Vanney’s final third. His physical presence up top should also create space for Gabriel Pec and Joseph Paintsil to thrive with the ball, ideally building on their highly-rated 2025 seasons.

*Next game: v. NYCFC | odds to win +151: \~40%*

---

### **5\. Seattle Sounders (+900: \~10%)**

The tactical spine of Brian Schmetzer’s 2026 squad will consist of the main contributors from last campaign, with Albert Rusnák, Cristian Roldan, Jesus Ferreira, Daniel Musovski, and Yeimar Gómez Andrade pulling the majority of the weight throughout each third. While Musovski will need to prove that last year’s 18 goals and five assists over all competitions weren’t just some wonky outlier, Ferreira’s summer World Cup aspirations will hopefully help fill any early scoring yips Seattle’s top scorer may experience. Either way, both should continue to be the main beneficiaries of Rusnák’s pinpoint ball placement, who will likely once again consistently find open teammates in the box to fire home shots.

*Next game: v. Colorado Rapids | odds to win -195: \~66%*

---

### **6\. Minnesota United (+1400: \~7%)**

With three of their top five rated players from the 2025 campaign now just a distant memory, the essence of a rebuild year is looming over the Loons. Although the front office may be masking this left-hand turn into an indeterminate era by signing the very talented James Rodriguez, the noticeable absence of Dayne St Clair and Robin Lod will hit them like a runaway freight train before they even realize they are lying helplessly on the tracks. If Rodriguez and his Designated Player partner in crime, Joaquín Nicolás Pereyra, can find ways to create off of each other, Minnesota may be able to buy Morris Duggan and a questionably talented backline some time to figure out how to address their outstretched blanket of defensive uncertainties.

*Next game: @ Austin | odds to win +205: \~32.8%*

---

### **7\. Houston Dynamo (+1600: \~6%)**

The epicenter of Houston’s buzz this offseason emanates from the $10 million club-record signing of Mateusz Bogusz from Cruz Azul. The dynamic, selfless attacker who can score from distance or run behind defenses is expected to immediately step in as the crown jewel of Ben Olsen’s “Captains and Winners” rebuild. With stalwarts Artur (once he returns in March) and Erik Sviatchenko sheriffing the backline for the Dynamo, Bogusz and traditional playmaker Jack McGlynn will have the freedom to push forward together. Early signs of chemistry between these two will be essential to keep Houston’s rebuild from crumbling at its foundation.

*Next game: v. Chicago Fire | odds to win +182: \~35.5%*

---

### **8\. Portland Timbers (+2200: \~4%)**

While they lost some major names in August and during the winter transfer window, the vibe between Kristoffer Velde, Da Costa, and Antony is designed to make the Timbers one of the most explosive—if occasionally chaotic—offenses in the West. Portland’s season hinges on this trio staying healthy and cohesive. Da Costa provides the brain, Velde provides the finishing, and Antony provides the pure acceleration. With the addition of Cole Bassett in midfield to provide late runs into the box, Portland has built an attack that will go toe-to-toe with any offense in MLS, despite their defense being suspect at best.

*Next game: v. Columbus Crew | odds to win +205: \~32.8%*

---

### **9\. Real Salt Lake (+2200: \~4%)**

Although the success of Real Salt Lake ultimately lies squarely on the shoulders of Diego Luna, Victor Olatunji’s capitalization on Luna’s creativity will be crucial for this team to exceed expectations. Additionally, central defender Justen Glad’s aerial abilities must continue to dominate, giving then grit at both ends of the pitch. When all is said and done, to keep Real Salt Lake competitive in every match, newly appointed captain Rafael Cabral must build from the back, systematically organizing the defense, getting the ball to Luna and, ideally, leading to a spectacular Olatunji finish.

*Next game: @ Vancouver Whitecaps | odds to win +395: \~20.2%*

---

### **10\. Austin FC (+2500: \~3%)**

In the blink of an eye, Austin FC has successfully built a formidable attacking side. While they have to wait for Brandon Vazquez to return to full fitness, the addition of Facundo Torres immediately elevates them to a outlying contender, creeping in the shadow, waiting to pounce. However, any reasonable season success rests on Brad Stuver and Daniel Pereira keeping things stable during the early months while the new attack finds its rhythm.

*Next game: v. Minnesota United | +138: \~42%*

---

The Brooding Bunch at the Bottom: FC Dallas (+2500); Colorado Rapids (+2800); San Jose Earthquakes (+3300); St. Louis CITY SC (+4000); Sporting Kansas City (+4000)
